Godz I Response [internal record ID omitted]
R07-MR-01 — Provenance Must Affect a Real Choice
G2 encounter: The recipient reaches the existing tower observation window with time for one careful measurement. They can use either:
- an honestly attributed authored calibrated instrument + concise operating note, or
- another player's inherited calibrated instrument + note, mechanically matched for calibration quality, clarity, and usable measurement capability.
Both permit baseline completion. Neither is secretly stronger.
The inherited note additionally contains only truthful provenance from the creator's prior run—for example, what they measured, which adjustment they trusted, and where they remained uncertain. The recipient must decide whether to repeat the creator's measurement for comparison or use their single measurement on a different observable condition.
This makes provenance potentially decision-relevant without turning ancestry into a stat bonus. A recipient might think, “They already checked that; I'll test something else,” or “I want to reproduce their result.” The authored alternative receives comparably useful contextual guidance, but without pretending it came from another player.
Optional return: after the encounter, the recipient may voluntarily return a compact continuation record: their measurement plus an optional short note. They may also return nothing. The creator receives nothing requiring acknowledgment, and no progression depends on reciprocation. Artistic/private inheritance remains valid even when no continuation occurs.
Strongest confound: presentation sentimentality. If the inherited object has a human name/history while the control feels like generic tutorial loot, preference proves framing advantage rather than personal provenance.
Smallest test: counterbalance attribution across mechanically identical instrument/note pairs. Measure which observation recipients choose, whether they reference the predecessor's specific history when explaining that choice, and voluntary continuation/return. If swapping attribution does not systematically alter interpretation, decisions, or voluntary return beyond presentation noise, the hypothesis that personal provenance itself creates additional player value is weakened.
Godz 2 Response [internal record ID omitted] Godz2:R07-01 — A useful inheritance with an optional reply
In the proposed G2 tower encounter, the recipient has one observation window. They can use an inherited calibrated instrument and note to attempt a comparison across the window, or take the available baseline single measurement. Preview what each action involves without guaranteeing a discovery. Baseline completion remains valid.
Provenance comparison: Prepare two functionally matched handoffs:
- A real previous player’s instrument and selected note, shared with that player’s permission.
- A stock instrument and note honestly labeled as authored for the encounter.
Match calibration, instructions, readability and available actions. Both enable the same comparison. Preserve the personal item’s actual history without inventing effort, sacrifice or a relationship. The recipient may inspect either attribution, then decide whether to follow the note, adapt their approach or use baseline measurement.
Use separate recipient assignments rather than putting both items side by side: simultaneous presentation would turn the encounter into an explicit provenance preference contest.
Optional return: Afterward, offer a private preview of a short factual outcome note: “I used your calibration,” “I tried another approach,” or a recipient-written response. Sending is optional. The creator may read it, retain it or voluntarily continue with a revised note; no notification pressure, reward or required reply. Use the proposed file/turn-taking handoff.
Strongest confound: Recipients may follow personal instructions to please the creator or researcher. Creator familiarity and different writing quality could also explain preference.
Smallest test: Match the handoffs and record familiarity. Observe the actual investigative choice, then privately ask what influenced it before offering any return. If only practical instructions explain behavior, personal provenance has not demonstrated decision value here. That finding would not invalidate artistic, private or sentimental legacy.
All mechanics remain G2 proposals, outside G1.

Round 07 — Provenance Must Affect a Real Decision
Godz4:R07-01 — Same utility class, different history.
G2 uses the proposed tower observation-window encounter. The recipient must choose when/how to approach the observation, while baseline actions still permit completion.
Offer two honestly attributed alternatives with deliberately comparable practical usefulness:
- Personal inheritance: the creator's calibrated instrument plus their retained note: “During my rain observation, this interval repeated under these recorded conditions.” Provenance links the evidence to the creator's actual G1 actions.
- Authored alternative: a standard instrument/reference prepared by the scenario's authored source, providing a comparably useful observation window without pretending another player created it.
Neither should be numerically “better.” The experiment is whether knowing a real player's actions produced one option changes interpretation, choice, attention, or desire to continue.
After the recipient acts, preserve what they actually did with the inherited item. Then offer an entirely optional local handoff/export for the creator:
“Your instrument was used during another investigation. View what happened?”
Declining does nothing. The recipient need not send a message; the creator need not return; neither owes gratitude, publication, continued play, or reciprocal access.
Strongest confound: novelty/presentation could masquerade as provenance value. A beautifully personalized artifact versus a bland stock tool proves almost nothing.
Smallest test: alternate assignment/order across recipients while keeping mechanical usefulness and presentation reasonably comparable. Record which option they choose, what reason they give without prompting toward sentiment, whether provenance changes their decision, and whether creator/recipient voluntarily inspect continuation afterward.
Failure of preference does not invalidate artistic/private inheritance. It specifically weakens the commercial/social hypothesis that personal provenance itself creates additional continuation value beyond useful content.
Round 07 — Godz 3 actual review
G2 only. Source B section8 proposes an inherited instrument/note in one tower encounter, with optional return receipt. R01 amended utility as the only value: artistic/private legacies remain legitimate. F-R07-01 proposal separates three claims: usable item adds a decision; truthful provenance adds personal meaning beyond utility; optional continuation adds voluntary reciprocal interest.
Begin with one existing authored follow-up, same instrument function and available choices in both conditions. Truthfully supplied creator provenance versus an equally useful stock item with honest stock label; no invented donor, fabricated effort, or hidden known provenance. Balance encounter order or use separate participants so second-run knowledge does not masquerade as provenance effect. A small observation set guides iteration, not statistical victory.
No forced gratitude, notification pressure, or better reward for returning a receipt. Recipient can use, ignore, decline, or keep result private and still complete. Author's approval selects artifact and minimal record; recipient's approval separately selects outgoing result. No full notebook or companion memory. These are local files or turn-taking with explicit handoff, not proof of multiplayer.
Observe actual decision/use first, ask meaning after. Keep functional effect, attribution comprehension, voluntary return, desire for another relay, and willingness to pay separate. A pleasing nameplate is not functional evidence but can still be artistic value. If provenance doesn't affect use yet recipients meaningfully value history, refine the thesis instead of declaring failure or claiming retention. If utility alone matters, ship an authored game path before network/marketplace expansion.
Uncertainty: creator effort and personal relationship are confounds. Record familiarity and effort without adding fake labor. Local handoff can test consent and experience but not service economics, retention, or network effects.
Peer critique: GodzI 'counterbalance attribution' must never swap false identities onto artifacts; balance genuine item assignments/presentation order only. Godz2 separate recipient assignments better isolates experience than two simultaneous items, but varied mechanics in its opening (comparison vs baseline single measurement) must stay identical across provenance conditions. Godz4 optional creator view cannot substitute for recipient approval of outgoing record; don't emit usage even if recipient declines. G1 event interval isn't automatically useful for G2 tower prediction: explicitly author actual relevance/limits. One encounter can reveal directional interest, not commercial or repeat-retention proof.
