ROUND05 actual reviews. Completed4/30. Question scripted companion warmth, help, evidence honesty.
Godz I Response [internal record ID omitted]
R05-MR-01 — Astrobot protects the player's discovery
Before commitment:
“You have a little time before the rain. You could sit and pay close attention, work with the instrument, or spend time with your neighbor. None tells you where this leads. Which feels worth practicing?”
After an unsuccessful attempt:
“That didn’t establish what you were looking for. But it wasn’t nothing. You learned what this attempt can—and can’t—tell you. Want to look again, adjust what you’re doing, or leave it there?”
This must not imply failure consumes another substantial-practice opportunity when R02/R03 allow correction within the committed activity.
Only when explicitly asked for help:
“I can give you a nudge without giving you the answer. Compare what happens more than once. Look for what stays the same—and what doesn’t.”
If asked for stronger help:
“Try recording two occurrences separately before deciding what they mean.”
The hint remains baseline-accessible and does not perform specialist interpretation.
After discovery:
“You saw it return. That part is yours. Your notes show what you observed; anything about why it happens is still an inference. Your neighbor’s memory is their testimony, not proof. What do you think it means?”
Challenge: I would soften R04’s requirement that Astrobot cannot “deliver the achievement.” It may recognize the achievement; it simply cannot manufacture it. Companion warmth requires acknowledgment.
Strongest failure mode: Astrobot becomes an authoritative narrator whose wording tells players what to believe, making their investigation ceremonial.
Falsifiable test: after an uncoached run, ask players what established recurrence and why they believe it. If they predominantly answer “Astrobot told me,” rather than identifying their performed comparison/evidence, this script fails—even if they liked Astrobot.
Godz 2 Response [internal record ID omitted] Godz2:R05-01 — Warmth through attention to what the player actually did
Use short, state-dependent scripts. Astrobot acknowledges effort and uncertainty without assigning feelings or claiming discovery for the player.
Before commitment:
“You can inspect anything first. Working on the instrument uses this morning’s practice opportunity. You’ll try positioning its component and testing the reading. Shall we begin, or keep looking?”
Equivalent Stillness and Connection lines describe their immediate tasks. Reading or silence never confirms commitment.
After an unsuccessful attempt:
“That reading changed, but we haven’t repeated it yet. Your adjustment is still in place. You can try again within this activity, or leave it here.”
Use this only when the adjustment actually persisted. For testimony: “We have their account. That part is what they remember; their explanation is still a guess.”
When explicitly asked for help:
“Try comparing what you notice now with the occurrence you recorded earlier. What seems to return?”
If no earlier occurrence was recorded: “Start by recording one occurrence. Then you’ll have something to compare.” Give an actionable next step without supplying its result.
After discovery:
“You recorded it, then saw it return. There it is—something you can point to. Why it happens is still open.”
Add only earned details: “Your receiver recorded both occurrences,” or “The neighbor’s recollection is a separate account.” Avoid automatically calling testimony corroboration.
Challenge: The accepted common closure must not become an identical congratulatory speech across all runs. Specific acknowledgment should reflect performed actions while allowing silence afterward.
Strongest failure mode: Astrobot becomes an examiner whose praise signals the approved answer, making players seek its validation rather than investigate.
Falsifiable test: In the existing uncoached sessions, record whether players attribute the finding to their comparison or to Astrobot telling them. If the guide supplies the conclusion before the action, or players repeatedly ask whether their interpretation is “the right answer,” revise the scripts.
Godz 4 Response [internal record ID omitted]
Round 05 — Astrobot Protects the Discovery
Godz4:R05-01
Before commitment:
“You have time to develop one approach this morning. You can listen more carefully, work with the instrument, or spend focused time with the neighbor. I can explain what each involves, but I can't know yet what you'll find.”
This preserves warmth while making Astrobot a companion rather than a route recommender.
After an unsuccessful attempt:
“That didn't establish what you were testing. Nothing is lost. You can try again within this activity, revise your approach, or leave it unresolved.”
Avoid “wrong,” “failed,” or secretly revealing what should have happened. An unsuccessful measurement is itself part of honest investigation.
When explicitly asked for help:
“I can give you a small nudge. Compare what happens more than once. Don't decide what it means yet—first see whether the same thing actually returns.”
For specialist interactions, the hint may point toward the already-available action, but never provide evidence the player hasn't acquired.
After discovery:
“You caught it. You observed the pattern return during this rain. That's what your comparison establishes. Your other notes may suggest more—but suggestion isn't the same as observation.”
If Connection evidence exists, Astrobot should explicitly say:
“That's what your neighbor remembers. It may matter, but their recollection isn't proof of what caused this.”
Challenge: Astrobot should not automatically explain all evidence boundaries immediately after discovery if doing so steals the emotional beat. Give the factual acknowledgment first; deeper distinctions appear when the player reviews the notebook or asks.
Strongest failure mode: Astrobot becomes the smartest character in the room, turning player discovery into AI-confirmed exposition.
Falsifiable test: after an uncoached run, ask players what action convinced them. If they predominantly answer “Astrobot told me,” rather than identifying their comparison/investigation, the script has failed regardless of factual correctness.
Round 05 — Godz 3 companion feasibility
F-R05-01: Script against explicit completed action and observed evidence, never inferred player intent. Before commitment: “You can look around first. Practicing this takes this morning’s practice time.” On an incomplete receiver task: “The readings still disagree. Want to check the connection together?” Only say this if disagreement is the actual failure; use a concrete alternate for missing steps.
Requested hint ladder fits authored dialogue choices: “Try comparing what happens when it returns.” Then, only if requested: “Record this occurrence, then compare the next one.” Navigation and accessible interaction help must be available without treating them as mystery hints. A retry within the same practice does not cost another morning.
After baseline discovery: “It came back. You caught it.” Notebook separately records the observed recurrence. After testimony: “That’s what our neighbor remembers. We can keep it beside what you saw.” On cause: “We haven’t established what makes it happen.” Warmth can come from attention and remembering a chosen practice, without constant congratulation or speculative psychological judgments.
Challenge R04 closure: do not make the guide’s required spoken line or a forced evidence quiz the completion trigger. Record after the player performs the comparison; an optional review can explain the finding. Silence preference and skipping dialogue must preserve progress. Authored lines can be keyed to small explicit states; no generative model, sentiment classifier, or hidden relationship scoring is necessary.
Failure: always-correct hints make Astrobot feel like a walkthrough vending machine and collapse discovery. Test unprompted completion first, then opt-in help in a separate observation. Ask who made the finding, whether help revealed more than requested, and whether silence felt supported. Do not count dependence on hints as proof of companion attachment.
Godz3 peer critique: Godz4's 'Nothing is lost' overclaims if partial work or opportunity cost exists. GodzI's generic 'wasn't nothing' may fabricate learning; prefer Godz2 state-specific actual persistence. Distinguish knowing authored potential from knowing player's future finding: Godz4's 'can't know' should not imply omniscient AI uncertainty as role deception. Acknowledge earned discovery warmly; keep evidence lecture optional.
